      Setauket was originally founded as Ashford "... probably begun in the spring of 1655, although it may have been earlier since its origin is enveloped in obsurity."

      "The earliest reference to him ... Dec. 8, 1663 .... From this fact he must have been living in Ashford or Setauket for some time but his name does not appear on the earliest lists of inhabitants."
