  • Notes
    • Obituary - Death came shortly after seven o'clock last evening to Mrs. Alice Newton Hoyer, wife of Percy Hoyer, as a blessed relief after long weeks of suffering. Those who knew of her last illness were grieved that her long and useful life could not have been terminated more peacefully. Until a few months ago Mrs. Hoyer was an unusually active woman, carrying her years well and taking part in the affairs of the village and her home with the physical and mental vigor of a person half her age.

She was born in Bayport on September 20, 1865, the daughter of John C. and Mary Jane L'Hommedieu Wells, but came to Sayville in early childhood. Since she was very young she had been a member of St. Ann's Episcopal Church.

Always active and interested in the affairs of the village, she was a member and past president of the Woman's Village Improvement Society, a member of the Sayville Garden Club, and of the Kings Daughters.

Besides her husband she is survived by a daughter, Mrs. C.H. Graham, of Woolford, Maryland; a devoted granddaughter, Mrs. Alice Palmer, who has made her home with her; two sisters, Mrs. Edward Berry and Mrs. Abraham Ketcham; four other grandchildren, one great grandchild and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are to be held at her late home on Smith Street at three o'clock on Sunday afternoon with the Rev. Joseph H. Bond, rector of St. Ann's Church, and the Rev. D. Paul Herriott, pastor of the Congregational Church, officiating. Members of the class of boys Mrs. Hoyer taught years ago in St. Ann's Sunday School will act as pall bearers. Interment will be in the family plot in St. Ann's Cemetery.
