- Died at Southside Hospital
Obituary - Mrs. Grace Skidmore, 83, formerly of Patchogue, died July 7 at Southside Hospital, Bay Shore. Born in Pennsylvania, she had lived in Patchogue 50 years. She retired from the Patchogue school system in 1959 after more than 20 years of service. She was the wife of the late Percy Monroe Skidmore.
Mrs. Skidmore attended Swarthmore College and held a permanent life certificate for teaching. Previous to teaching in Patchogue, Mrs. Skidmore taught for three years at West Orange, NJ, and four and a half years in Center Moriches. She was a substitute teacher in the Patchogue school system for 12 years in all grades from K-12. She taught full-time in the Patchogue Junior - Senior High School for 11 years.
She was past president of the Bay Avenue School PTA, past president of the Senior High School PTA and past president of the Patchogue Central Council, PTA; a former director of the Eastern Suffolk County PTA, and had served on the Long Island District Board of the PTA. She was a life member of the National Council of Parents and Teachers.
In the Junior High School she was an advisor to the first class that graduated and was a sponsor of the Tourist Club for several years. She was a member of the Patchogue Congregational Church and had been active in the Women's Fellowship and the Mission Study Group of the church.
Mrs. Skidmore is survived by a son, John M. of East Patchogue and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Ruland Funeral Home, Patchogue, the Rev. Kenneth A. Halstead officiating. Interment was in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Patchogue.
