Obituary:
CARL C. BAKER, FORMER RESIDENT,
DIES IN BALTIMORE, MD., HOSPITAL
Carl Conrad Baker, 53, well know former resident of Zanesville, and general manager of the Baltimore, Md. plant of the National Biscuit company, died at 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Baltimore hospital following an operation performed Thursday.
News of his death comes as a shock to his many friends and former business associates here. He had been ill for only three weeks prior to the operation.
Mr. Baker was manager of the National Biscuit company in this city until he was transferred to Baltimore in April 1934.
He was the son of the late William R. and Louise Stolzenbach Baker, and was born in this city. His father was founder of the Baker Bread company, of which Robert Baker, Forest avenue, is now president.
He received his early education in the Zanesville schools, and upon completion of his second year in high school went to the Montclair academy, Montclair, N. J. He later enrolled in the Rochester Business college, Rochester, N. Y. His academic training was completed in 1908 with his graduation from Sheffield scientific school of Yale university.
In September 1908, he became associated with the national Biscuit company, and served the company in the Buffalo, N. Y., Philadelphia, Pa. plants. In 1912, when only 27 years of age, he was named superintendent of the company's Zanesville plant, a position he held until 1920, when he became general manager of the local office.
Member of Lutheran Church
Mr. Baker was a member of the St. John's Lutheran church and a charter member of Phi Sigma Chi, local high school fraternity.
On Oct 22, 1913, Mr. Baker was married to Miss Florence Frazier, daughter of the late Common Pleas Judge and Mrs. A. A. Frazier, Sunset avenue.
Surviving are four children: Alfred W. Baker, 2330 Verneva street; Frederick F. and Carl C., Jr. and Miss Dorothy Louise Baker, all of the home; two brothers, Robert, president of the Baker Bread company, and Frank Baker, Lima; one granddaughter, Miss Barbara Jean Baker, of the Verneva street address; an aunt, Mrs. Otto Bauer, Maple avenue, and his mother-in-law, Mrs. Frazier.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the home of his brother-in-law, F. F. Frazier, 504 Putnam avenue with Dr. W. M. Hacke berg officiating/ Place of burial is undecided. The body will arrive in this city early Monday afternoon and will be removed to Mader-Peoples funeral home.
Mrs. Baker and children will arrive from Baltimore Sunday evening. Robert Baker and F. F. Frazier, who were summoned to Baltimore because of Mr. Baker's condition; will arrive in the city Monday afternoon.
