      Fern McAvoy Trutschel, seamstress

Fern McAvoy Trutschel began her career as a seamstress at age 16.

"She was a seamstress and tailor all her life. From the time we we were kids, all the way up," recalled her son, Harold "Pete" Trutschel, of Dayton.

She spent 30 years working at Hyde Park Clothes in Newport.

Mrs. Trutschel, 93, of Dayton, died Friday at Hospice of Cincinnati.

A native of West Virginia, her son said "she lived here in Dayton for 80 years."

She also enjoyed riding motorcycles with her husband, Raymond, and high performance cars.

"They rode motorcycles all over the west and West Virginia," her son said. She even biked at age 89, when her son said he took her for a ride on his motorcycle.
Among high performance cars she enjoyed was a SS396 Chevy Chevelle.
"Dad would buy the cars. Mom always drove the new one," her son said. "No power steering. No automatic transmission."
"She drove up until she was in her 80's."
Her husband, Raymond Trutschel, died in 1999. They were married for 74 years.
