MRS GOLDSMITH, "Grand Old Lady" Of Center Moriches, Dies at 94
Mrs Louise Maria Goldsmith, Center Moriches' "Grand Old Lady", passed away early Monday morning, January 15, at her home on Main street. She had been gradually failing during the fall and winter.
She was born July 8, 1839 at Rocky Point, daughter of Amos and Juliette Hallock, both of prominent old Long island families. Mrs Goldsmith was the last of the family of nine brothers and two sisters. On February 21, 1865, Mrs Goldsmith was married to David H Goldsmith of New Suffolk, where they lived for a time, then moved to Port Jefferson, and about 52 years ago came to Center Moriches. Before her marriage, Mrs Goldsmith taught school at Rocky Point, New Suffolk, Middle Island and Selden. She was a member of the Center Moriches Methodist Church and Missionary Society and up to a short time before her death was a familiar figure in the village. She lived by herself as an independent homemaker until last winter when her older son Orrin Goldsmith and his wife took up residence with her.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon in the Center Moriches Methodist Church, with the pastor, Rev Harold G Sabin, officiating, followed by interment in Mt Pleasant Cemetery. The pallbearers were A K Chichester, Ezra Hawkins, Frank F Penney, D I Brown, Arthur Edwards and R T Dayton, all of Center Moriches.
Two sons, Orrin Goldsmith, and David E Goldsmith, president of Center Moriches Bank; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren, survive.
