OLDEST BUSINESS MAN AND OLDEST MASON PASSES AWAY
Wilbur F Hammond For 60 Years Engaged in Jewelry Business Died Thursday
Wilbur Fisk Hammond, Greenport’s oldest business man, died at the home of his son Court Hammond, on Thursday March 10th after a short illness. Mr Hammond who was in his 84th year, was born in Sayville LI, a son of Louis and Ann E Hammond. When a young man, Mr Hammond moved to Greenport with his parents and learned the jewelry trade in his father’s store.
For over sixty years, Mr Hammond has been engaged in the jewelry business in Greenport and was noted throughout this section of the island for his skill as an engraver and his ability as a watchmaker. Up to several weeks ago Mr Hammond was actively engaged in his business and despite his years was as active and ambitious as many a younger man. During his years of experience in the jewelry business Mr Hammond patented several appliances which were generally adopted in the jewelry trade. Not only was Mr Hammond the oldest businessman in the community, but was also the oldest member of Peconic Lodge, F & A M, having been a Master Mason for 56 years.Mr Hammond is survived by one brother, Fred Hammond of Greenport; one sister, Mrs Ada Foulks of Brooklyn; three sons, Court of Greenport, LeRoy of Rockaway Park LI, and Wilbur of Bridgeport Conn.
Funeral services will be held at the home of his son Court Hammond on Saturday afternoon with Rev William Striker, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment will be in Sterling Cemetery with the members of the Peconic Lodge conducting the services at the grave.

Hammond- Mrs Wilbur F Hammond died at her home on Central Ave Greenport
yesterday morning from arteriosclerosis in the 80th year of her age. Her
maiden name was Frances H Terry, daughter of Henry H Terry of Orient, one of
Southold Town’s most prominent citizens of the time. She was born May 17, 1838
at Orient. Mrs Hammond was a graduate of the Wilmington College. She was a
bright woman and had a host of friends.
Besides her husband she leaves three sons, Leroy of Jamaica, Wilbur F Jr of
Bridgeport and E Court of Greenport; a brother Henry H Terry of Orient; and two
grandchildren, Ruth and Leroy Hammond. Funeral services have not been decided
upon at this writing, but they will probably be either Sunday or Monday
afternoon.
