Born c.1598, first pastor Rev. John Youngs/Yongs founded the Puritan settlement of Southold, Long Island, in 1640. A native of Reydon, in Suffolk, England, he was the son of the Rev. Rev. Youngs' grave is one of nine originally marked by slate ledgerstones which were probably carved in England. His stone and that of William Wells are the earliest with legible dates in the burial ground. However, Rev. Youngs' original ledgerstine is now covered by a replacement. Made in 1935, it bears the original epitaph (see "Inscription" section of this page). In addition, it is also inscribed with the history of his descendants' efforts to preserve it:
"Under this tablet is the original brownstone slab, with the following inscription...The original inscription on this stone was recut in 1857 by one of the third and one of the fourth generation of Rev. Young's grandchildren, Dea. Stephen Youngs, Morristown, N.J. and Capt. Selah Younge, Mattituck, L.I. Recut 2nd time in 1900 by Edward F.C.
