ANDREW DUDLEY, SR., HONORED ON 77TH BIRTHDAY
On June 6th, according to yearly custom, some of the children, friends and neighbors met to do honor to Andrew Dudley, Sr., on his 77th birthday.
An elaborate dinner was spread for the fifty five guests. Anticipating many good things to eat, L. H. Woodard from Vernal showed good judgement by bringing Dr. George H. Cruikshank with him to take care of those who might have stomach trouble.
After dinner the following program was rendered: Group song, "Make the World Brighter." Sketch of the life of Grandpa Dudley who is father of 15 children, 12 of whom are living, 60 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, by Sina Dudley; piano solo, Mrs. Elsie Case; Song, Joseph S. Dudley and company; Talk on genealogy by Andrew Dudley Jr.; Duet, Atta Chatwin, Sadie Bourdette, accompanied by Myrtle Dudley, piano and Rose Bourdette, on the violin; Piano solo by Geraldine Case; song, Ethel Murray; song Mrs. Gerald Stewart.
At the close of the program a family organization was effected by the following officers: Joseph S. Dudley, president; Mary E. Wilkins and Sarah A. Rasmussen, vice presidents; Myrtle Dudley, secretary; Andrew Dudley Jr., genealogist; A. Demar Dudley, historian and recording secretary. Other officers will be chosen later.
Before departing the large birthday cake, made by Mrs. Gerald Stewart, was cut and distributed to all the guests present.

    Sudden Death.
Just as we go to press we learn of the death of Mary L. Dudley, wife of Andrew Dudley, Sr., of Jensen, which occurred yesterday at 11:30 o'clock a.m. after a brief illness of only a few days' duration. Death was due to some internal complication, the nature of which is not certain.
The deceased was born at Spanish Fork fifty years ago, and was a daughter of Stephen Markham of that place. With her husband she came to Uintah County and settled at Jensen in 1887, where the family has since resided. She leaves quite a large family, five of whom are still living at home, three girls and two boys, the youngest being five years of age, The funeral will take place tomorrow.

Life Sketch: "...Stephen Markham, was born 9 February, 1800, in Genesee
Valley, the town of Rush now called Avon, New York. He was baptized
into the Latter-Day Saints Church in July 1837 in Chester, Ohio, by Elder
Abel Lamb. He played an important part in the building of the City of
Nauvoo. He was elected Lieutenant Colonel of the first regiment, first
cohort of the Nauvoo Legion. He was a very good and faithful friend to the
Prophet Joseph Smith and acted as a body guard to him through all his
troubles with the mobs. Stephen Markham came to Utah with Brigham
Young and was Colonel of the whole pioneer company that arrived on July
23, 1847, of which he acted as scout along the way.
Grandfather (Stephen Markham) was one of the first to see the Great
Salt Lake Valley and to hear President Young say, "It is enough, this is
the place." Three weeks after his arrival, he went back to Nauvoo to help
other companies to Utah. He continued in this work for two years.
! Eliza R. Snow wrote the song "O My Father" in her meagerly furnished
low-roofed room in the home of Stephen Markham in Nauvoo. It was
penned on a wooden chest which was the only table her room afforded.
! In the fall of 1851, Stephen Markham and his family (at this point it
consisted of his wife Mary Curtis Houghton Markham, her son, Edgar
Houghton, and her two nieces) settled in Palmyra (possibly now called
Leland, UT) and in March 1852 the first Church organization was made
with him as President. Grandfather's home was always open to the
immigrants and because of his generous hospitality his house was full
all the time. A few of the ones who made their home with him are John
Hayes, Thomas D. Evans and his wife, Priscilla.
! In 1856, when the Saints were advised to move to the present site of
Spanish Fork, Stephen Markham took a section of land just west of
Spanish Fork and it was there that he made his home until his death."

Came to Utah in 1850, in Stephen Markham's company. Listed both as
Mary C. Houghton and as Mary C. Markham.

Life Sketch: (William) Don (Carlos) Markham's mother, Mary Curtis
Houghton Markham, was born in Highland, Oakland, Michigan. She was the
daughter of Jeremiah Curtis and Ruthy Stratton. She marr5ied Oren
Houghton when she was 14 years old and to them was born one son,
Edgar. Her husband died, and in 1850, Mary with her son and her sister's
two children, immigrated to Utah in one of Grandfather's (Stephen
Markham) companies. They left Nauvoo in June, 1850. She worked hard
for four long months driving a span of mules, a yoke of cows, and a yoke
of heifers across the dreary plains. The weary company arrived in Salt
Lake on 4 October, 1850. She was married to Grandfather (Stephen
Markham) when she was 18 and he was 50 years old, and they settled in
Palmyra (may now be Leland, UT) in 1851.

Baptized into LDS Church as a child probably about 1840; baptism date is for a rebaptism.
