    After the death of his wife Harriet on February 1, 1921, Joel quickly returned to New Jersey with the seven children. His sister Julia threatened to take her own life if Joel did not allow her to raise his baby daughter Gloria. Joel did give Gloria to Julia to raise, and Julia changed her name to Mildred.
    Joel married Olive Genevieve Biggs just 2 months after the death of Harriet. (Joel did know Olive when he lived in New Jersey. Olive's parents were so concerned about the quick courtship that they insisted that the newlyweds live with them for a time after the marriage. The children were "farmed out" to his sisters.
    Joel and Olive lived with Olive's parents Bernardo and Bertha Ulmer for the first two years of their marriage. Joel's children from his previous marriage were farmed out to his sisters.
