    Eliza Markham Hansen

Eliza R. Markham Hansen passed away on August 5, 2010 while surrounded by loving family after struggling with a chronic illness.

She was born February 27, 1923 in Spanish Fork, Utah to Iva Christena and Joseph Wilford Markham.

Growing up on the farm, she learned the value of hard work. Eliza graduated from Spanish Fork High and continued her education through the L.D.S. Hospital school of nursing program.

She married her high school sweetheart, Clyde Hansen, on April 12, 1944 in the Salt Lake Temple. After completing nursing school, she worked in the field of nursing for many years, enjoying her career in the thoracic ICU at the L.D.S. Hospital.

Eliza and Clyde traveled the world visiting all seven continents, countless countries and all fifty states. They loved going on cruises, camping with their travel trailer, and fishing at Diamond Fork. Additionally she was an avid bridge player, attended Tai Chi classes, quilted, and was an awesome seamstress.

She was an active member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. She and Clyde loved ballroom dancing and were known to go dancing every weekend for many decades.

Eliza was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She was called to a wide variety of church callings in the Canyon Rim Ward. Eliza walked daily for exercise and covered many miles, visiting with neighbors, picking up trash, and enjoying the Canyon Rim area.

She was known for decorating her yard for a variety of holidays. Eliza made all kinds of candy. Her excellent fudge was a favorite of the family. She routinely made dozens of batches of candy and gave them away at Christmas to neighbors and mailed them to missionaries. This was a cherished gift by those who received the plates of goodies.

Eliza loved the temple and attended temple sessions around the world. She provided countless acts of service throughout the neighborhood and enjoyed being a Secret Santa.

She is preceded in death by her parents, sister, Beth Marsden, sister, Barbara and brother, Lee. She is survived by her husband of sixty-six years, Clyde, son, Gregg (Paula), daughter Kaye (David) Bjorkman, and sister Gladys Bell. Eliza has six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren with twins due in January.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday August 9, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in the Canyon Rim First Ward Chapel, 3100 East 3000 South, where friends may visit with the family from 9:30 to 10:40 a.m. prior to the services.
Interment and dedication of the grave will be held at 2:30 p.m. in the Spanish Fork City Cemetery.

Life Sketch: "...Stephen Markham, was born 9 February, 1800, in Genesee
Valley, the town of Rush now called Avon, New York. He was baptized
into the Latter-Day Saints Church in July 1837 in Chester, Ohio, by Elder
Abel Lamb. He played an important part in the building of the City of
Nauvoo. He was elected Lieutenant Colonel of the first regiment, first
cohort of the Nauvoo Legion. He was a very good and faithful friend to the
Prophet Joseph Smith and acted as a body guard to him through all his
troubles with the mobs. Stephen Markham came to Utah with Brigham
Young and was Colonel of the whole pioneer company that arrived on July
23, 1847, of which he acted as scout along the way.
Grandfather (Stephen Markham) was one of the first to see the Great
Salt Lake Valley and to hear President Young say, "It is enough, this is
the place." Three weeks after his arrival, he went back to Nauvoo to help
other companies to Utah. He continued in this work for two years.
! Eliza R. Snow wrote the song "O My Father" in her meagerly furnished
low-roofed room in the home of Stephen Markham in Nauvoo. It was
penned on a wooden chest which was the only table her room afforded.
! In the fall of 1851, Stephen Markham and his family (at this point it
consisted of his wife Mary Curtis Houghton Markham, her son, Edgar
Houghton, and her two nieces) settled in Palmyra (possibly now called
Leland, UT) and in March 1852 the first Church organization was made
with him as President. Grandfather's home was always open to the
immigrants and because of his generous hospitality his house was full
all the time. A few of the ones who made their home with him are John
Hayes, Thomas D. Evans and his wife, Priscilla.
! In 1856, when the Saints were advised to move to the present site of
Spanish Fork, Stephen Markham took a section of land just west of
Spanish Fork and it was there that he made his home until his death."

Houghton Markham, was born in Highland, Oakland, Michigan. She was the
daughter of Jeremiah Curtis and Ruthy Stratton. She marr5ied Oren
Houghton when she was 14 years old and to them was born one son,
Edgar. Her husband died, and in 1850, Mary with her son and her sister's
two children, immigrated to Utah in one of Grandfather's (Stephen
Markham) companies. They left Nauvoo in June, 1850. She worked hard
for four long months driving a span of mules, a yoke of cows, and a yoke
of heifers across the dreary plains. The weary company arrived in Salt
Lake on 4 October, 1850. She was married to Grandfather (Stephen
Markham) when she was 18 and he was 50 years old, and they settled in
Palmyra (may now be Leland, UT) in 1851.
