    He was a widower when he married Ellen Camilla Mary Anne CumberbatchThe Lloyds of Harley Street - SoG Volume 1 Page 79).

    His will was proved August 1897 and showed: 'of Candlli on theBosphorus and Galata in Constantinople'. The value of hos estate was£2268.11.6d. His widow Ellen C.M.A. Clifton continued to reside atthe house known as the 'Yali' (i.e. the Big House) with her threedaughters until they all married when, following the death in 1909 ofher stepson, Charles Plummer Clifton, the house was sold. It wasburned down during WWI following the sinking of a small oil tanker inthe Bosphorus but in April 1971 the stone built house, upon which themain house had been erected, was still clearly visible with a morerecent building upon it (The Lloyds of Harley Street - SoG Volume 1Page 79).

    George married Ellen Camilla Mary Ann Cumberbatch 14 Nov 1872, Istanbul, Turkey. The marriage wassolemnised at the Consulate Chapel at Smyrna according to the Churchof England on 14 December 1872 (The Lloyds of Harley Street - SoG Vol1 pp 79). The solemnisation was witnessed by Robert W. Cumberbatchfather of the bride (The Lloyds of Harley Street - SoG Vol 1 pp 79).

    Letter from Robert William Cumberbatch dated 31 July 1848: We aresuffering greatly from the heat, the thermometer is generally 86degrees in the shade. The cholera still consumes in some localities.The deaths at Jassy during 40 days amounted to 12,000, the number isnow under 40 per day. My brother has taken a very nice house with agardnen in the adjoining Turkish Quarter which will serve for a summerresidence..... this privilege has lately been granted by the Sultan onaccount of the demand and scarcity of houses since the late fire (TheLloyds of Harley Street - SoG FH/LLO Vol1 pp 78-79).

    26 October 1850 (Fanny Hart writes): Poor little Ellen ! ! I am assorry for the poor girl as you are but certainly will not be the firstto make advances to Robert's family especially as I have too many other claims upon me (The Lloyds of Harley Street - SoG FH/LLO Vol 1pp 79).

Personal Estate£440 10s 8d in England.

    RWC went to Constantinople on 1 June 1845 as secretary to his half-brother Abraham Carleton Cumberbatch, the Consul-General until 22 May 1855. He became Acting Second Consul 25 May 1855 to 30 June 1856, third Vice Consul to September 1857 and was appointed Consul at Berdiansk, Sea of Azoff 12 January 1858. He went to Smyrna 25 April 1864. Appointed Post Office Agent, Smyrna 25 September 1872.

In 1829, he also owned The Farm Plantation, St. Peter which then had 22 Male and 28 Female Slaves totalling 50 slaves in all - more details in Folio 227 Volume 5th (T71/546 Colonial Slave Registry 17 Date 1829). In 1832, he was still the owner of The Clelands Plantation, St. Andrew which then had 107 Male and 115 Female Slaves totalling 222 slaves in all - more details in Folio 315 Volume 4th (T71/552 Colonial Slave Registry 17 Date 1832).     Monumental Inscription to Charlotte Cumberbatch nee Burnet Jones in St. Mary, Paddington (In the Church, on north wall of north gallery, on a sculptured white marble tablet; above is a broken pediment, with a kneeling figure, angel's head, and child below:-

    Sacred to the Memory of CHARLOTTE CUMBERBATCH, daughter of the late Robert Burnet Jones, Esqre and of Elizabeth Susanna his wife. Born October 5th 1786; Married A.P. Cumberbatch ESQre October 31st 1805. Died January 15th 1818. Her afflicted Husband has caused this monument to be erected. She lies entombed with her father Rt Burnet Jones ESQre and her youngest brother Joseph Jones, ESQre in the North Ground of this church. Benjamin William Robert Cumberbatch, her second son died at Bifrons, near Canterbury, May 7th 1820, in the 8th year of his age.

    Her husband Abraham Parry Cumberbatch was of Barbadoes, later of Tubney Lodge, co. Berks, then of The Broad, Hellingly, co. Sussex, and died at Tunbridge Wells October 1840, aged 56. She was his first wife. The had issue an only surviving son, Abraham Carlton Cumberbatch, Consul at Constantinople, and a daughter Eliza*.

    The arms should be : Gules, an eagle displayed between three trfoils Or. See G.W. Marshall's "Collections for a Genealogical Account of the Family of Comberbach," p. 38. A pedigree of Jones is in Burke's "Landed Gentry".

    *Eliza Cumberbatch married Revd Henry Chichely Michell, Vicar of Lymington, Co. Hants.
