Drowned at Artist's Lake, Middle Island, age 18

Obituary - An evening swim to refresh himself after a day 's work on his father 's farm proved fatal, last Wednesday to William Francis Raynor, aged 18, of Ridge who failed to respond to three hours' resuscitation work by police, called to Middle Island after the youth was overcome in Artist's Lake there.
Along with Ruth Randall, aged! 14, and her brother, Sherwood Randall, aged 16, both of Middle Island, young Raynor went in for a swim in the lake about 7:30 p. m.
The Randall boy could not swim, police said, and Raynor helped him several times to get to and from a raft about 25 feet off shore.. At 8:40, after accompanying his friend back to shore, Raynor started swimming out to the raft alone.
There is a sharp drop off shore and on reaching a point about halfway to the raft, Raynor sank, presumably from a cramp. William Zebrowski and Arthur Kuehnel, both of Middle Island, enlisted in the rescue work, and about 10 minutes after the, boy went down, the two men recovered his body in about seven feet of water.
A call to Patchogue brought Village Police Sergeant Welden Logan with the Village Police inhalator, Dr. Wilbur S. Stakes, Brookhaven Town Police Chief Edward N. Bridge and Town Officers John Harding, Alvin Smith. Wallace Jay and George Oakley. Gaetano Stephani of East Patchogue drove Sergeant Logan to the scene.
From 9 o'clock until 12:20 a. m., the police , operating in shifts, worked feverishly in an effort to revive the boy, who showed a slight pulse when taken from the water. At 12:20, death was pronounced by Coroner Grover A. Silliman of Sayville, who had been called to the scene.
The body was removed to Sharp's Funeral parlor in Patchogue.
The boy is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Manley Raynor, one sister, Janet Raynor, and two brothers, Sidney Raynor and Wilfred Raynor, all of Ridge. He was born on Shelter Island and had lived in Ridge for the last year.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday from the Methodist Episcopal Mission, Middle Island, the Rev. W. D. Britt officiating, assisted by the Rev. Guthrie Pitbladdo of Shelter Island. Interment was made in Shelter Island cemetery.
