Smith serving in the 5th Regiment, New York Veteran Infantry, Company H, for the Union side, rank private during the Civil War (Source: U.S. Civil War Soldiers, 1861-1865), but chances are he would have been too old to serve during that time, kept for later reference.

    There is also a record of an Edward Smith, seaman, aged 61, who died in in April 1860 in Brooklyn, NY of consumption. (Source: U.S. Census Mortality Schedules, New York, 1850-1880), might be Edward B. Smith, but again, kept for later reference.
