Irving registered for the draft in 1918 at the age of 45, showing an address of Clinton, Worcestershire, Mass., wife Vestella Dix, and was appointed a Secretary of the National War Work Council of the Y.M.C.A. by the War Personnel Board for service with the troops with the American Expeditionary Force in France in 1918. He later served as a Scientific Aide for the Agricultural Department of the U.S. Government.
