    Notes:

Obituary - Sayville lost a good and useful citizen in the death of John Newton which took place at 2:30 last Saturday morning. He was in his 68th year and was born in Patchogue, the son of Jacob and Charity Newton, the latter still living in Terryville, L.I. at the age of 90 years. Besides his mother he is survived by his wife, one daughter, three grandchildren and four sisters. His death was due to a nervous debility resulting from a serious accident that befell him four years ago and to a series of mishaps since then. Much of the intervening time he has been an invalid, confined to his home or a hospital room until his culminating misfortunes became greater than he could bear, and his brave spirit was broken. Most of his life has been spent in this village, in which he carried on a livery and teaming business, coming during all these years into contact with people of all walks of life until he became one of the best known citizens of Sayville and because of his kindly, helpful, good humored ways, one of the best beloved. He possessed a generous heart and never in all his life knowingly harmed one of his fellow men.

He was a charter member of the Sayville Fire Department and of Court Bayside, Foresters of America, which organizations were well represented at the funeral, which was held from St. Ann's Church on Monday afternoon at two o'clock and was very largely attended. The services were beautifully conducted by the Rev. Jos. H. Bond, acting rector, assisted by the Rev. W. T. Edds, of the Congregational Church. The interment was in St. Ann's Cemetery.

    Notes:

Obituary - Death came shortly after seven o'clock last evening to Mrs. Alice Newton Hoyer, wife of Percy Hoyer, as a blessed relief after long weeks of suffering. Those who knew of her last illness were grieved that her long and useful life could not have been terminated more peacefully. Until a few months ago Mrs. Hoyer was an unusually active woman, carrying her years well and taking part in the affairs of the village and her home with the physical and mental vigor of a person half her age.

She was born in Bayport on September 20, 1865, the daughter of John C. and Mary Jane L'Hommedieu Wells, but came to Sayville in early childhood. Since she was very young she had been a member of St. Ann's Episcopal Church.

Always active and interested in the affairs of the village, she was a member and past president of the Woman's Village Improvement Society, a member of the Sayville Garden Club, and of the Kings Daughters.

Besides her husband she is survived by a daughter, Mrs. C.H. Graham, of Woolford, Maryland; a devoted granddaughter, Mrs. Alice Palmer, who has made her home with her; two sisters, Mrs. Edward Berry and Mrs. Abraham Ketcham; four other grandchildren, one great grandchild and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are to be held at her late home on Smith Street at three o'clock on Sunday afternoon with the Rev. Joseph H. Bond, rector of St. Ann's Church, and the Rev. D. Paul Herriott, pastor of the Congregational Church, officiating. Members of the class of boys Mrs. Hoyer taught years ago in St. Ann's Sunday School will act as pall bearers. Interment will be in the family plot in St. Ann's Cemetery.
