Obituary in Suffolk County News (Sayville) - 1888-1942, 1996-2007

Mrs. Ann Eliza Foster -- A Long and Useful Life Ended Very Suddenly on Tuesday.
Mrs. Ann Eliza Foster died early on Tuesday morning at her home, "Greycote," on Foster Avenue. Despite the fact that Mrs. Foster would have been 84 years old if she had lived until July, the news came as a very great shock to scores of people, for she was one of the women who never seemed to grow old and it was hard to believe that her span of life had run. She passed away at 2 o'clock after and hours illness of acute heart trouble.
She was born in West Sayville 84 years ago, a daughter of Alfred and Angeline Brown and was one of their seven children, two of whom still survive Mrs. Foster, Elbert Brown of Sayville, and Mrs. Henry Ingraham, of Traverse City, Mich. On Oct. 16, 1853 she was married to Andrew D. Foster, whom she survived 11 years. They had an ideally happy married life and were blessed with five daughters and 3 sons.
Mr. Foster and his wife had a very considerable part in the development of the village a half century ago. They first built the house on Main street, which for many years has been the property of Justice D.D. White, and here they lived for a considerable time. Later they built the Foster House, for years one of the bess known hotels in the countryside. They were noted and delightful hosts and to their house came many famous people who were searching for the truest hospitality. Among them was the famous actor, Joseph Jefferson, who came frequently to Sayville to enjoy the fishing. Later Mr. and Mrs. Foster purchased what they called the farm, on Foster avenue and built the Hotel Delavan, conducted for many years as an exclusive summer hotel.
Mrs. Foster was a woman with a heart large enough to embrace the community. People loved her because she loved people. No task was too large for her to accomplish for her friends. Her happiness was always bound up, not only in the joys and troubles of her five daughters and three sons but the lives of hundreds of people who in all these years have made her home their shrine.
She had been ill this winter but her splendid vitality and strong will seemingly made a lengthy illness impossible. She apparently completely recovered and for weeks had been around the house as usual. On Monday she was exceptionally active and did some cooking and even baked a cake.
Mrs. Foster was from early girlhood a member of the Episcopal Church. She went to first old St. Johns in Oakdale and later when St. Ann's was established here she became a charter member and was the first to welcome the new rector, the Rev. John H. Prescott who for more then 40 years has presided over the parish. Surviving her are four daughters Mrs. C.C. Haines, of NY; Mrs. G.A. Robinson, and the Misses Minnie and Amy Foster, of Sayville, besides five grandchildren, and one little great granddaughter.
Services were held at the Foster home at 2:30 o'clock yesterday, the Rev. John H. Prescott officiating. The interment was in St. Ann's Cemetery.

    Notes:

From the "South Side Signal" of Babylon, Long Island Under the heading "SAYVILLE RECORD": Saturday, July 05, 1873 Page: 2
--Found Dead.---The dead body of the missing man, Mr. Alfred Brown, was found in the woods, about a mile from his house on Sunday morning last, and in such a putrid condition that it could with difficulty be removed to a place of burial. The 19th of June was an extremely hot day, almost too much for any man to endure, especially in the woods, where not a breath of air was stirring. The old man died from sunstroke, and apparently without a struggle. Justice Strong, assisted by Dr. Van Deinse, empaneled a jury, who rendered a verdict that death ensued from exhaustion and excessive heat. Too much praise cannot be awarded to the citizens of this place for their unceasing effort in search of the body. Especial mention could be made of a number of our people, prominent among whom stands Supervisor John Wood, who with his characteristic whole souled effort in such cases, did all in his power to stimulate and encourage..................for ten days the search of the missing man.
