    (Summmary of Reubens life was submitted to the Big Kaynon Lasting LegacyMonument-Dedication 24 Oct 1998) Reuben a Builder and Missionary: Atage 18, with skills of a bricklayer and tradesman, he joined the LDSchurch in the face of heavy opposition. Under the direction ofAustralian Mission President Rudger Clawson, he built several chapelsbefore emigrating to Salt lake city in 1927. Arriving with a suitcasefull of family names, collected from elderly Australian Saints, hepersonallly completed the temple work for several hundred persons, aspromised. In 1935, he founded the Sugar House Eleventh East Furniturestore. In 1936, he returned to Australia for three years on a chapelbuilding-proselytizing mission. In 1947, accepting a mission call, hebuilt the Tonga-Liahona College from bricks made on site. near theintersection of 17th South and 23rd East are eight homes he built beforeand after WW II. A legacy of 22 grand children and 37 plus greatgrandchildren are forever grateful. Where Ethel and Ray Lived:
    1. 1527 East Romona Ave, Richard and David(Born at LDS hosp)had their preschool years here. Famous for Saturday bathing in the kitchen in a roundgalvanized tub. A Wood and coal black kitchen stove, ice box and coalwood furnace in the basement that caused Ethel to cry several times whenit wouldn't start. Ray worked at the Granite Furniture in the repair andfinishing area until 1937 mission to Australia.
    2. Apartment above the Eleven East Furniture Store about a year beforethe store was closed and Ray went to Work at the Small Arms Plant onRedwood Rd during WW II
    3. 1729 So 23rd East. Ray built the house on a preexisting oldfoundation on the south-west corner of the James Dean farm site. Thefamily was living here on December 7, 1941, Richard remembers the Sundaymorning as he was one his way to pick up a pale of milk from ErnestNelson who lived about 1500 So 23rd East. 4. Southern California forabout 2-4 weeks. Near the end of WW II, with gas ratiioning still inplace, All their world belonging were packed in and trailer and the 35Desoto took the family to California to escape the severe hayfever andasthma that affected Ray every summer in SLC. We lived in an Astralianfamily garage for the month. Absolutely no homes were available and noprospects of getting building materials either. The family returned toSLC.
    5. About 1825 Siggard Avenue was our home for one year. Richard began the7th Grade at Olympus Jurnior, David Attended William Penn.
    6. 2299 East 17th So,1944-45 Ray purchased 4.5 Acres with an old 4 roomfarm house. The remodeling was complete, chicken and cow pens were built,fruit trees planted and vegetable were raised each year. 1947,a brieffinal visit to Australia before begining a fulltime building mission.Reuben went to Tonga for 1 year to build the College (actually a HighSchool). 7. 1616 So 23rd East build immediately after WW II occupied1948-1960 8. 1626 So 23rd East, the home they were living in when Richardand Sylvia returned to Utah in 1963.

Ethel (daughter of James Dean and Marion Maud Harbottle) was born 8 May 1906, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia; died 4 Jan 1991, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, United States; was buried 7 Jan 1991, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, United States.     Notes:

    In March of 1909 Ethel emigrated from Brisbane to Salt Lake City. She wasalmost 3 yrs old. Traveling with the Deans was Maggie Hardman & BessieStewart. Because one adult could bring one child free on the boat, Ethelbecame Ethel Stewart during the voyage. In Salt Lake City, Maggie livedwith the Deans, at 1940 So. 13th East, helping with the Children. Thehouse had only one bedroom the first year. Maggie eventually married JohnKennison and they moved to Woodland, California. They were a frequentvisitor at the Ray and Ethel home in SLC, as were the Tollmans fromHoneyville and Dorothy McMillian and her sister Eve Rule and theDelahanty family from Magna. Ethel attended the Salt Lake high schoolspecializing in bookkeeping. After graduating she worked in theaccounting department of ZCMI before she was married. The small weddingreception was held in the 7th East Home, were the Dean family moved afterleaving 23rd East. Ethel maintained close association with a group ofyoung women that lived above 15th East from the original Parleys Wardarea. They signed their names in a "The old Sugar House Pioneers" bookthey presented to Her. She returned to Australia twice. First, on afamily mission in 1936, second with her husband in 1975. Her motherlived with her in the "60's" during which a lot of Genealogy work wasdone. She entertained many Australia visitors. A sweet lady, eventempered, optimistic, dedicated to her family, church and genealogy. She died from causes related to age in SLC, 1991.
