Daughter of Samuel Smith Hammond and Charity Elizabeth Edwards, wife of Sidney A. Ackerly, whom she married on August 7, 1849 in Patchogue, New York, and mother of Frank H., Marianna (married George H. Donaldson), Samuel Wilson, Julia E. (married David Tolhurst, married Valentine Southard), and Evelyn C. Ackerly (married Frank Smith).
In 1870, Mary C. Ackerly, aged 44, was living in Brookhaven, NY, post office Port Jefferson, with her husband, Sidney Ackerly, aged 46, and children, Francis Ackerly, aged 8, Mary Ann Ackerly, aged 17, Julia Ackerly, aged 14, Eva Ackerly, aged 11, and her widowed father, Smith Hammond, aged 79. Her husband was shown to be a painter.
In 1900, Mary C. Ackerly, aged 79, widowed, born May, 1821 in New York, was living in Babylon, NY. Living with her were children, Frank H. Ackerly, aged 49, a house painter, Julia Tolhurst, aged 42, widowed, Evelyn C. Smith, aged 39, divorced, and grandson, Myron F. Smith, aged 16, a press feeder for a printer.
Obituary - The funeral services over the remains of Mrs. Mary Caroline Ackerly, widow of the late Sidney Ackerly, formerly a well known contractor of this village, were held at the home of the deceased on Tuesday. The Rev. E.D. Bassett, pastor of the M.E. Church, assisted by the Rev. J. Havergal Sheppard, of the Baptist Church, officiated. The interment was in the Rural Cemetery. Mrs. Ackerly died on Saturday afternoon last at her home on James Street, in her 85th year. For a person of her years she was extremely active, her mental faculties remaining unimpaired until her death. She was a member of the M.E. Church, and her life told how consistent she was in the discharge of her religious duties. She was a daughter of the late Smith S. and Charlotte Edwards Hammond. She was born in Patchogue, where she had resided until thirty-five years ago when she came to Babylon with her husband. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. George H. Donaldson, Mrs. David Tolhurst and Mrs. Evelyn Smith, four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a brother, Capt. Samuel S. Hammond, of Patchogue, besides other relatives. Mrs. Charles Gillette, and Capt. S.S. Hammond, respectively bridesmaid and groomsman at the marriage of Mrs. Ackerly nearly sixty years ago, were present at the funeral, with tokens of sympathy.
