Obituary - A grand old gentleman of Bellport, George H. Piermann, died at the age of 87 Friday morning at the South Shore Convalescent Home , Patchogue. Born in Brooklyn April 6, 1873, he came to Bellport as a youth and spent a most active life in business and civic affairs of the community. He followed the building line most of his long life and was a member of the well-known firm of Armstrong & Piermann, with the late William L. Armstrong. This firm built most of the large homes in Bellport, with Mr. Piermann doing much of the designing. One of the organizers of the old Bellport Hook & Ladder Company in 1893, he was the last surviving charter member of the Bellport Fire Department. He was very active during the early years of the company, participating in the many tournaments entered by the enthusiastic young company. He served as assistant foreman of the Hook & Ladder Company for several years and during the early 1030's was elected chief of the department. On the occasion of the sixty-fifth anniversary of the fire department in 1958, Mr. Piermann was presented with a plaque in recognition of his long, devoted service. When the Village of Bellport was first incorporated in 1908, Mr. Piermann became its first clerk. He later was elected a village trustee and at the time of his death was building inspector of the village, a position to which he was appointed several years ago when the post was first established. He was also a former trustee of the Bellport School District in the early 1900's. Since his retirement from the active building line, he kept his talented hands busy in his home, one of the oldest in Bellport, built in 1837, and in his workshop at the rear of his home on Hulse Street. He was an expert on restoring antiques, he caned chairs, printed signs and kept his building inspector's books in the most neat fashion. As late as this Spring, he painted signs in Old English lettering that showed a most steady, talented hand. Last year he made a replica of an eighteenth century clockmaker's sign for Carl Staunstrup 's jewelry shop that is a tribute to his fine talents. Possessed of an excellent memory, he loved to recall the old days of the fire department and his earlier years in Bellport, including the years he conducted a movie theatre in old Woodruff hall, which he had built about 1892. An interested visitor to his home always came away much enriched by the information he would most willingly and calmly relate. Mr. Piermann leaves a son. Stanley B. Piermann of Bellport; two daughters, Mrs. Harold Penny of Bellport and Mrs. James Macaulay of New Jersey, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Bellport Fire Department services were held at 8:30 p. m. Sunday in the C. W. Ruland Funeral Chapel, Patchogue, and the burial service at 2 p. m. Monday in the Bellport Methodist Church, with the Rev. Frederick I. Smith officiating. Interment was in Woodland Cemetery, Bellport.
