BIydenburgh Family. Augustine Blydenburgh was a Hollander who, in 1676, with his wife Silvestia lived m the present Stone Street, New York, where he owned two houses. He died in 1686, leaving a last will, now on file in the New York Surrogate's office. He had children, Joseph, William, Benjamin, Samuel and Mary, wife of Harmon King of Flushing. The will speaks of William, as then, August 22, 1685, at sea, and provision is made in case he should not return. Presumably he never returned, as his mother's will in Dec. 1688, makes no mention of him. There is no further trace of Samuel. Benjamin went to England in 1695, returned to New York and went to South Carolina about 1704. He was a cordwainer by trade. Joseph was admitted a freeman of the city in 1691, together with his brother Benjamin. In the same year he was elected Constable of the Dock Ward. In 1693 he bought of Thomas Lloyd, of Philadelphia, the property, seemingly, on which the Trinity building now stands. In 1696 he fitted out some ten or a dozen mariners for the expedition on the ship Adventure, Galley, Capt. Wm. Kidd commander, taking their bonds in payment conditioned on the result of the voyage. In 1697 he gives twelve shillings towards glazing Trinity Church. He went to Smithtown about the year 1700, having previously married Deborah, daughter of Jonathan Smith, eldest son of Richard the pattentee, and May 1 of that year bought a house and thirty acres of land from Obadiah Seward of Brookhaven, in which Joseph B. is described as of the said towne merchant. From Joseph is descended the Long Island family of that name. From Joseph Blydenburgh and his first wife Deborah descended : A daughter Silvestia, who married Conkling. A son, Richard 1st, 1694-1772: married Mary Brewster, 1708-1767; issue. William ist, 1728-1768; Benjamin, 1730-1775- Mollie or Mary, born 1733, married John Platt; Alma or Amy, born 1740, married John Phillips; Samuel 1st, born 1746; John, born 1748. will, dated 2 Aug 1685, filed in the New York Surrogate's Office

    AUGUSTINE BLYDENBURGH
Nearly all Blydenburghs in the U.S. can trace their ancestry to Augustine Blydenburgh, who was b. before 1630, presumably in the Netherlands since he was referred to as a “Hollander”. He d. between 20 August 1685 – 13 April 1686 in New York City.
The surname Anglicized as Blydenburgh, with or without an h, appears in many variants historically and among the Dutch, often with an “ij” or “ey” in lieu of a “y”, sometimes an “e” instead of a “u”, sometimes without a “d” or with a “t” instead, with or without ending “h”, and other variations. In Augustine’s will his name is spelled Augustin Blythenbord.
Research by Henry Hoff, Harry Macy Jr., and Edward H.L. Smith III, published in the NY Genealogical & Biographical Record, volume 140 (2009), shows that before Augustine’s arrival in New York, he had owned property (375 acres) in Old Rappahannock, now Essex, County, Virginia, from as early as 1655 or 1656. He sold that land in 1662, probably leaving Virginia at about that time. He may or may not have gone directly to New York, but appears in records there starting in 1672. At least a few of his descendants remained in the Chesapeake Bay region.
There was a merchant Paulus Blijenberg/Blydenburgh in New Amsterdam (now New York) between 1658-1661, who may have been a close relative of Augustine’s.
Augustine m. Silvestia, surname unknown, before 23 January 1661/62 in Virginia. She was b. about 1640, and d. before 8 January 1688/89 in New York City. Her first husband, of whom she is presumed widow, was an unknown Green/Grien. Her child from that marriage, Augustine’s step-daughter, was known variously as Mary Green/Grien and Mary Blydenburgh. She was b. before 1661, probably in Virginia, m. Harmon/Hermanus King/Kinge 28 May 1676 in the Dutch Reformed Church in New York City, and d. 24 January 1740/41 in Burlington County, New Jersey. Children of Augustine and Silvestia include:

Harmon/Hermanus King/Kinge 28 May 1676 in the Dutch Reformed Church in New York City, and d. 24 January 1740/41 in Burlington County, New Jersey. Harmon/Hermanus King was b. in 1652, probably in Fort Orange, New Amsterdam (now Albany, New York), and d. 1 September 1726 in Nottingham, Burlington County, New Jersey. Although they married in the Dutch Reformed Church, King either was or they became Quakers. There is some disagreement about who his first wife was. The marriage license gives the name of the bride as Mary Smith, who is said to have been the daughter of Richard “Bull” Smith, who settled Smithtown, Long Island, but other sources suggest that Joseph’s first wife was actually Deborah Smith, who was b. 1670, daughter of Sarah (Brewster) and Jonathan Smith, and thus a granddaughter of Richard “Bull” Smith, and d. before 19 May 1699.
