    Notes:

    There ia story that William Satterly born in 1632 and son of Thomas, near Exeter England Became a clergyman of the Established Church and came to America before 1655. He was said to be one of the first proprietors of Brookhaven Town at Setauket in 1655 (then called Cromwell Bay), by a colony of immigrants from near Boston, MA, the land was bought from the Setalcot Indians and the sale confirmed by a release from Wyandance, Sachem of Montauk. The family names of the leading settlers were Woodhull, Pierce, Smith, Satterly-ly, among others. He was a man of considerable wealth when he drowned in Long Island Soiund with John Moger and Samuel Dayton. By 1677 there were enough travelers of 'Wincoram' or present day Coram to induce William Satterly, to seek a grant from the Town to keep a tavern or ordinary for such travelers. The following entry appears in the second book of the Brookhaven records under the date of Sept. 6, 1677. "William Sattery doth ingaege to cup the ordnery at wincoram he and his haires for ever and upon condition the towne have granted and given to the said William sattery and his haires a hundred akers of uplands around wincoram and whom the saide william sattery shall sattisfy to his content in Reson."
