    !Brief Sketch: He was Deputy in 1669 and often afterward. He was one of
    the wealthiest merchants of his time, made many trading voyages and
    was lost at sea Nov. 5, 1685, aged 49 years, leaving a large estate to his
    widow and his only child. The inventory of his property amounted to
    5,786 Pounds Sterling, and was with one exception the greatest up to
    that time in Hartford.

    !Brief Sketch: Came to America at age 21 ahead of his father. He settled
    in Newtown (now Cambridge) Mass. In 1636, in company with his father
    and mother and brothers, he traveled...through the wilderness and settled
    the town of Hartford, Conn. He became an Original Proprietor and first
    settler of Hart- ford, his home lot in 1639 being next west to his
    father's. (pg 7 of source) Richard Lord was one of the most energetic
    and efficient men in the colony. When the first Troop of Horsemen was
    organised, he was chosen commander, 11 Mar 1658, and distinguished
    himself in the Indian Wars. (pg 8 of source)
    ! He became a very prominent citisen and in addition to being captain of
    cavalry, was a ship owner in the carrying trade between New London and
    the West Indies. He owned a home there (New London) and died there in
    the 51st year of his life...his gravestone may still be seen there with the
    following inscription:

    !Epitaph: "The bright Starre of our Cavallrie lyes here;
    ! Unto the State, a Counselour full Deare
    ! And to ye truth a Friend of Sweet Content,
    ! To Hartford Towne a silver Ornament.
    ! Who can deny to Poore he was Reliefe,
    ! And in composing Proxysmes was Chiefe.
    ! To Marchantes as a Patterne he might stand,
    ! Adventring Dangers new by Sea and Land."

    !Came to America 1632. Settled in Newtown (now Cambridge), Mass. In
    1636, went with father, mother, and siblings to settle Hartford. Made
    freeman, 4 March 1635. On Founders' Monument in Hartford, Conn.

    her will, she refers to her brother George Graves, but she was not his
    sister. He had a sister Sarah who married a Mr. Deming. George Graves
    was a deacon, and in those days a deacon was usually referred to as
    "brother".
