Brown's Tragic End a Shock to Village
Brother-in-law, Ernest Barber, Extinguishes Blazing Clothing But Victim Dies Later in Hospital.
Due to burns he received at his home in Center Moriches Wednesday morning Everett Brown died at Dr King's hospital in Bay Shore that afternoon, where he had been taken by ambulance after his brother-in-law, Ernest L Barber, put out the fire in the victim's clothing.
The tragedy is laid to Brown's attempt to start a stove fire with kerosene, which exploded. He was a native and life long resident of Center Moriches, about 55 years old, and widely know, and the whole community was greatly shocked by his sudden passing.
He lived in a bungalow in the rear of the property of his brother-in-law and sister, Mr and Mrs Barber, on Chichester Avenue. About 7:30 in the morning neighbors saw him run out into the yard with his clothes all ablaze and roll in the snow. Before they could go to aid he got up and ran on toward the main house and Barber, hearing cries, rushed out and wrapped him in a coat, smothering the fire.
It was found that Brown's body was a mass of burns from head to foot, and after first aid he was taken to the hospital, in a doubtful condition. He sank rapidly from the shock and died about 5pm. Investigation in the bungalow disclosed the oil can with the bottom blown out.
Mr Brown was a church worker of wide activity. He leaves two brothers and two sisters, DL Brown, Edmund Brown and Mrs Barber of Center Moriches, and Mrs H C Smith of East Moriches.
