    graduate of Stuttgart University according to The New York Times obituary;
    sent by Therese (Rosa) Schloeder of Trier according to Agnes Streit Schloeder

    Elaine Marie Schloeder Viscardi wrote: "Some time in the early 1880s, Jacob went to Germany to study music. He stayed with Aunt Rosa [Theresa Schloeder] before going to Suttgart. Jacob had been baptized Catholic but brought up Lutheran. Aunt Rosa was a practicing Catholic and on the first Sunday, she roused Jacob to go to Mass with her. He objected, but she prevailed. He was against anything Catholic, but soon met a priest who was able to change his mind and he soon returned to Catholicism, making his First Holy Communion and Confirmation the same day or a day apart.
    When his family found out about his conversion, family legend has it that his father said 'he would beat it out of him'. It seems when Jacob returned home, he and his father sat at the kitchen table, not talking, just staring at each other....Jacob Anton blinked and Jacob Herman remained a devout Catholic until his death. He was the first organist at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Harlem and even after moving to Brooklyn around 1905-06, he travelled by subway to play at every Mass or any other ceremony. In 1914-15, he had a stroke and stopped playing. He was also a pianist for Steinway Hall in Manhattan and gave piano lessons. He was honored by Pope St. Leo for his work in Church music....receiving a Papal Blessing. This Papal Blessing is now in the possession of Janet Schloeder."
