Notes - Born 1843 and died 1921 on gravestone; born Apr 1846 according to 1900 US Census
"...a bugle boy or drummer for the unit enlisted fromhis home town for the Civil War, and his name is on a Civil War memorial in Greeport, NY." according to great-grandson, James Droste.
Served in the Civil War as a drummer or bugle boy. Listed on a monument
in Greenport, NY, giving the names of those from the village who served
in the Civil War.
Loved to give everyone a nickname. Called his daughter-in-law Jessie
"Rosie." Rosie was a former girlfriend of Harold, Jessie's husband. The two
were the best of friends, and in Jessie's eyes, William Ellis could do no
wrong.
Jessie knew that William Ellis had come for an extended visit when he
brought his can of pipe tobacco with him. It seems to have happened often,
as my mother, Jessie and Harold's daughter, can remember him coming to
visit. He would fight with his wife, and stay with his son for about a week,
never contacting his own wife. Then he would return home.
William Ellis died in the home of Harold and Jessie. He asked Jessie to
help him sit up in bed, so he could see out the window. The next time she
went into his bedroom, later in the morning, to check on him, he had died,
apparently peacefully.
His granddaughter Margaret remembered him fondly, tho she was very
young when he died. She did not know where he was born, but knew he was
at least raised in Greenport, if not born there.
Margaret estimated his birth year as 1841. I found a census record of
William E Price, age 16, in the 1860 census. Margaret had given his
father's name as Edward, but the father in the census record was Thomas.
Born in Wales as Margaret said William E's father was. I have taken this to
be the family, as this was the only Price family in Greenport in the 1860
census. Since William Ellis went to the Civil War from Greenport, as a child/
noncombatant, this seems very likely.
