Several of the notes of condolence sent to his widow after his death described him, aptly, as "a gentleman and a gentle man."

Married once before marrying Margaret. Name of lady unknown. Told me, his son Jim, that after three days of marriage he realized he was thinking only of Margaret -- my mother. Divorced first wife. No dates of marriage or divorce known. However, I suspect they were married in or near New York City, in about 1944.
He reported for Navy boot camp in November of 1943. He told me he had to decide between two women, and figured he'd be happier with the one who loved him best. This first bride visited him in Newport News, where he went for training, and remained while they processed the paperwork to commission him. He was a degreed engineer, so they made him an officer. Since this lady visited him, he decided she loved him more, and married her.
