Will (source Ernest M. Wiltshire): John Sober, late of the p. of St. Peter in the Island of Barbados, now of Little Bursted, co. Essex, Esq. Will dated 12 Oct 1751.
My father-in-law Nich. Wilcox of Bdos Esq., Edwd: Clark Parish of L., Esq, Abr. Carleton Cumberbatch and Joseph Lindsey, both of Bdos, Esqres. on T. all my sugar work plantations and personal estate. 200 negroes, 100 cattle and 10 horses to be kept on my estate, 60 a. to be planted in provisions, negroes to be well fed and clothed, and casks to be made. My sd. father in law Nich. Wilcox and Mother in law Margt. Wilcox, Ed. C. Parish, A.C. Cumberbatch, J. Lindsey and my brother in law Nich. Wilcox £50 each. My nephew and niece Wm and Sarah Timbrill, chn of my late sister Eliz. T., wife of Wm. T. decd, £500 each at 21 and £40 a year each till then. My friend Rob. Wadeson £10. My wife Mary Sober, late Mary Wilcox, dau. of sd. Nich. W. Esq, £1500, our mar.sett. dated 25 Oct 1743, and £100 for mourning, all my plate with the coat of arms of her father, her riding horse, jewels, use of my house in Bdos until my eldest son be 21. My father in law Abr. Cumberbatch has by his will lately made broke his contract in regard to four of my chn, Sarah Sober, Abraham Sober, Mary Sober and Cumberbatch Sober. I give them each £3000 c. at 21. My cousin Joseph Pickering, now i L, £10. My eldest son John at 21 all my real estate and residue of personal estate; power to heir to charge estate with joynture of £200 c. Son John to go to Oxford at 17. T. to be Ex'ors.
Codicil. Late of G.B now of Bdos. My father in law Nich. Wilcox has died. To my wife my coach and 6 horses, the use of my house called the Castle on my pla. in St. Peters and use of house-negroes and £150 a year if she do not dwell there. My aunt Mrs. Reba. Almond of St. Lucy £50 c. To poor of St. Peter £10 a year for 10 years. My wife, my bro-inlaw Nicholas Wilcox and friends Hon. Ph. Gibbes of St. Jas. Esqres. and ev. Jonathan Dennis, fellow of Q. Coll. Oxford with Edwd. C. Parish and Jos. Lindsay Ex'ors and T. and G. of my 5 chn. Revoke app. of A.C. Cumberbatch. Jon. Dennis £100 for his care of my 3 sons and £50 for mourning. Ph. Gibbes £50. Dated 16 Nov 1755 in the presence of Gen. Lavine, Edw. Wilson, Ph. Lovell. Bdos by the Presidt. Ph. Lovell was sworn at Pilgrim 2 Dec 1755, Ralph Weekes. A true copy 28 May 1762. Rich. Husbands, D.
