    • surname spelled Yonges at christening

Joseph Yonges was a sea captain. In 1635 he was a master of the ship "Love" which embarked passengers from London, England and transported them to New England. He brought with him his sister, Mary, and her husband, William Browne, and doubtless his own family (his first 2 sons were born in England in Jan 1634 and Mar 1635 ), as well as the family of his brother Christopher. They disembarked at Salem, Massachusetts.
In 1638, he was a master of the "Mary and Anne" (the vessel in which the Rev. John Youngs' family came over). The ship carried passengers and cargo from Plymouth Plantation to England. In 1638, he was admitted an inhabitant of Salem, and together with his brother Christopher, each were granted a half acre of land at Winter Harbor for their fishing affairs (to cure fish). Joseph was also granted a ten-acre lot "neere Mr. Downings farme", and on June 2, 1639, he was granted thirty acres of land. In 1640/42 he obtained judgments against Richard Graves and Richard Hollingworth, the principal shipwrights of Salem.
Joseph removed to Southold, Long Island about 1649. In September of that year he sold two houses in Salem to David Carwithy. At Southold he continued as a master of a vessel, making trading voyages to Barbadoes and elsewhere. At Southold in November 1656 he is recorded as taking on cargo for the vessel the "Mary and Margaret. - Information provided by Find A Grave Member, Anonymous(#46603377).
