      Charles Jayne, Esq.

      My Dear Sir:

I herewith inclose copy of the records as I have them of your Great Great Grandfather-William Jayne-Your Great Grand Father Timothy Jayne and your Grandfather David Jayne.
You will see that Timothy Jayne was the second son of William Jayne while John Jayne was the fourth son. John Jayne was my grandfather-Ebenezer Jayne was the 6th or youngest son of William Jayne. Doctor David Jayne of Philadelphia was a son of Ebenezer Jayne-Your grandfather David Jayne, My father Benaiah Jayne and Dr. David Jayne were all first cousins. I was at your Grandfather's house in 1848 with my father and his family record as I give it to you was as he gave it to me at that time excepting those items taken from your letter and marked with a cross after each-If you can supply the day of the month, or month in any of the blanks pleas do so and give them to me. Can you not get the names of the wives and husbands of your grandfather's brothers and sisters and give them to me. Your Grandfather s youngest sister Mrs. Whil??? was living only a few years since at West Cayuta Schuyler Co M??, but I understand she has passed away (she died Nov 15, 1857). Your Great grandfather Timothy Jayne was one of six bothers. Five of whom held commissions in the Continental Army. He was a Captain and was captured at the Battle of Flat Bu??? Song Island with his entire company, and was held for over two years on a prison ship in N.Y Harbor with his bothers Isaac and Ebenezer who were Lieut. and Ensigns of his company. I am trying to trace all the descendants of William Jayne born in 1712 who bear his name and I want the cooperation of any who would like a copy of such record when completed.
If you will take the patience to do so, you can trace all of the descendants of Timothy Jayne. Please acknowledge the receipt of this and tell me if you will make the effort. Give me the names of any of the cousins of your father that may know and make the records I send you so complete as you can from any data missing in the forms. Can you not get the date of your Great Grandmother Sarah Allen Jaynes death. Your Grandfather must have had that and your father or your Aunt may know. Send me your fathers, your Uncle Timothy and your Uncle John's family records and the dates of the death of your Uncle John and your father's sisters.
You see the form I have adopted, I am getting the Record in the same way of all of the descendants of W. Jayne born 1712 as fast as I can gather these. Hoping to hear from you soon again. I am very truly

      Your Cousin
      B.G. Jayne

Your Grandfather had brothers Timothy, Ebenezer, and David. Tell me if you can if you know anything of those families and fill up the blanks so far as you can as your grandfather's family Record and send me your father's family record. I want to get the family record also of your Uncle's families
I am trying to get the records of the families of every one by the name of Jayne in the United States. They are all descendents from William Jayne Borne in 1712.
I propose to have the record printed when completed and I shall most cheerfully send you a copy. Will you aid me in getting the record of those in your locality?
I have the record of your Grandfather's brother John very complete.
      I am very truly yours,

      PS

It looks like a large task I have laid out for you, but I am certain you will be interested in having the past relating to your own branch of the family come. You will see in the blank for your own family that I have put in pencil under the heading place of death your address. Please do this in filling the blanks. I want the P.O address of all. Now I shall be very much obliged to you if you will get these filled out as you can and return them. I am constantly urged to preserve in the record and complete by a member of the family.

      Charles Jayne, Esq.

      My Dear Sir:

Thanks for the records in yours of the 18th. The Jayne Family was originally Presbyterians. Calvinistic puritans. Your Great Grandfather was a Baptist as were all of his brothers. Two of them being Baptist preachers of great ability and power. That part of Middle Smithfield Township where William Jayne settled in 1756 and where he and his sons resided is now "Coolbaugh Township, Monroe County. I have been there a number of times. The old homestead was occupied by Isaac Jayne, the son next younger than Timothy and after him by Peter Jayne, Isaac's young son. And since Peter's death by one of his sons. The old house has been burned in the last few months and with it the Old Bible with the Record in the handwriting of William Jayne. But there are several copies of the record existing.
My father's youngest sister, Aunt Affa Crawford, and by the way the last survivor of that generation (she died on the 14th of this month) says that her Aunt Sarah, your great grandmother died in 1819, but she couldn't give an accurate date. Of course I accept your dates in regard to your grandfather's family as authentic. I do not know now what my dates were taken from but know they were obtained at your grandfather's in 1848. Mrs. David Jayne had given me the name of Mrs. Emilla Smith as a daughter of Daniel Jayne and I had written her previous to receiving yours.
Bishop Janes was descended from William Jayne 1st of 1618. One of he (William Jayne's) sons was named James Jayne. Many of his descendents are sowed through R.I. Co??? and N.J. ??? spell the name the same as the Bishop, but all trace back to the same parent stock, the old puritan preacher. It may be a year before I print the Record, yet I hope to print it next fall.
I shall be glad to obtain any additional data you can furnish. It does seem strange that not of the Wyoming people can give any information in regard to the descendents of Ebenezer, Timothy, Daniel, Rebecca, or Sarah Jayne-brother and sister of your grand father.
I have often heard my father tell of his cousin Ebenezer Jayne who was a soldier with him in the War of 1812 and was wounded through the neck. The ball entering below one ear and coming out below the other cutting off the palate and seriously interfering with his speech. And how he was left on the field of battle for dead, and how he was saved by a French Surgeon when the others pronounced his wounds mortal. And I remember that he was living since my recollection and that my father met him. My recollection was that he met him in Philadelphia but I may be wrong in this for the mist of years has made my recollection dim. Your grandfather's brother Timothy lived in or near Pittsburgh Pa. My brother Wm. H. Jayne, now residing in Nebraska was for many years in the employ of Dr. David Jayne of Philadelphia. He was personally well acquainted with your grandfather's brother Timothy who had a son who was also employed by Doctor Jayne at the same time. He says Timothy Jayne died in December 1850-at or near Pittsburgh, and that Daniel was at that time living in the State of Indiana.
It does seem strange if the Cousins in Wyoming County have no knowledge of the families of these Uncles.
See what you can obtain from the son's of William and John Jayne in regard to these Uncle's families.
Edgar L. Jayne, David Jayne's son is now at my house. You may have known that he was with us for some time during his course in Cornell University in Ithaca. Hoping to hear from you again and that we shall meet at no distant day in the future.
      I am very truly yours,
      B.G. Jayne

In glancing this over it looks like a short curt letter, but is not so intended for I feel under many obligations to you for your kindness and am presuming in making further drafts upon you. Am succeeding in getting much ancient and valuable information. An old block letter Record of the Jayne and ???? families in the hands of a Welch Clergyman is my last valuable discovery by which I trace the English descendents of Wm. Jayne.

      E. C. Jayne Esq.

      Dear Cousin,

I have received two letters from John Jayne, a son of your Uncle Philip who resides at Woodsport from which I have compiled the in-closed record. I put in pencil the addresses so far as I have obtained them. I have written letters within the last two days to each one whose PO address I have and asked each to supply the addresses of the others. I have the partial Record of Corneulius D. and Ebenezer D. Mary D. had but one child-I have wrote for her Record.-Phillip-John and Mahlon three of your Uncle Philips sons are unmarried.
I wrote to Mrs. Jennings who answered promptly giving the Record of her mother's family. I received a letter also from your cousin Mary J. Bastedo (sp?) giving your Aunt Amia's (sp?) family record. I do not try to trace farther on this female line than to give those whose mother was a Jayne. That is I give place to the family record of your and my Aunts with their full family Record, but their children appear only in the Record of their mother's family. that is the Record will contain the families of those only where the father or mother born the name of Jayne.
Our Great Grandfather William Jayne left nine children, six sons and three daughters. The six sons left forty-six children who left families. Of these twenty-five were sons and twenty one were daughters. Eighteen of these twenty-six sons now traced have sixty sons who have families and there are a number of these sixty who have great grand children. You will see by this that the tribe of Jayne has become quite numerous. The peculiar feature of the family is the remarkable average longevity and uniform respectability. I am at present some what behind in my correspondence having been ill from a congestion of the lung. I have some business in Philadelphia next week and may drop in on you for a few moments.
      I am very Truly Yours,
      B.G. Jayne

      E.C. Jayne Esq.
      Dear Cousin,
Your very welcome letter of the second came duly for which receive my thanks. William Jayne I born at Bristol England Jan. 25, 1618. Died in Brook Haven on March 24, 1714. Came to American in 1678 at the age of 60. Married Anna Briggs in 1782 and by her raised seven sons: 1st William II born March 1684; 2nd Samuel; 3rd Matthias; 4th John; 5th Daniel; 6th James; 7th Stephen born in the year 1700. There may be some doubt about the order of birth of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th as I have not the dates of their births. William, Matthias, John and Stephen were free-holders in that town in 1737. Samuel and Daniel sold out on Long Island in 1726-Samuel to Stephen and Daniel to Matthias. William died in 1753, Samuel in 1765, Daniel in 1781, Janes in 1785, and Stephen in 1774. Of the dates of deaths of Matthias and John I have no record. William was a Cooper. Stephen a Blacksmith and all were Yeomen or landowners. William II from whom we are descended married Anna Sterling in 1709 and by her had four sons and a number of daughters.
William III our Great Grandfather born April 12, 1712 was the eldest. Samuel, born December 1713, Isaac, born November 1715, and Joseph, born 1727. Of the number or ages of the daughters I have no data. I remember my Grandfather telling me when a little boy of his Aunt Katurah Brewster who was his father's sister. He had an Aunt Anna also. William, our Great Grandfather left Long Island with his brother Samuel in 1753 and moved to Blooming Grove Orange County where your Grandfather, his youngest child, was born in 1754. All of his other children having been born on Long Island. Samuel settled at Florida Orange County where he died in 1779 leaving one son Samuel and an unmarried daughter Mary and a wife or widow "Dinah". In 1756 our GG father moved to what was then Middle Smithfield Northampton Co. Penn, now "Coolbaugh" Monroe Co. Pa. Isaac moved to Vermont and left five sons and one daughter at least, Anna who married her cousin, your and my Grandfather's brother Isaac. Joseph remained on Long Island. He married Abigail Strong by whom he raised ten daughters and four sons. The old Bible gives the dates of their births.
Returning to our Great Grandfather, in 1733 he married Tabitha Norton who was born at Brookhaven October 13, 1713. By her he raised six sons and three daughters. He died in 1798 at the age of 86, and she died in 1808 aged 95. Their children were:
1st William IV born in 1735, killed at the battle of Fort Washington November 16, 1776.
2nd Anna born in 1737. Married Benaiah Gustin and died in 1821.
3rd Tabitha born in 1739. Married Richard Horton and died in 1820
4th Captain Timothy born April 15, 1741. Married Sarah Allen and died January 20, 1790.
(Timothy was Captain and Isaac Lieut. of the Company of which your grandfather was Ensign).
5th "Betsey" (Elizabeth) born in 1743. Married Thomas Owen. Have no record.
6th Lieut. Isaac born November 26, 1746. Married Anna Jayne, died Jan. 12, 1809.
7th John born Dec. 25, 1748. Married Cornelia Decker, died April 25, 1838.
8th Elder David born May 14, 1751. Married Elizabeth DeWitt, died March 9, 1827.
9th Elder Ebenezer born Feb. 19, 1754. Married 1st Elizabeth Riggs 2nd Mary DeWitt, died March 27, 1826.
Of the families of these, William IV had one son born November 16, 1758 who was wounded at the assault on Fort Washington, a ball passing through his lungs. He died at the house of his Uncle Timothy a few weeks later. Uncle Timothy's son David told me he saw him die at his father's house. He also had two daughters, Anna and Tabitha, born 1756 and 1760. They married two brothers, Joseph and Chambers (sp?) Posinell (sp?) and each left large families. William left no descendents named Jayne. Anna, who married Benaiah Gustin, had no children. Tabitha who left two sons at least, died near the old home in Middle Smithfield. Richard Norton Jr. married Uncle Isaac Jayne's daughter Tabitha, while another brother married Uncle David's daughter Tabitha. She had many descendents. Captain Timothy Jayne left six sons and four daughters who raised families:
1st Anna Jayne born in 1764. Married David Ogdena nd by him raised four children. She then married Aaron VauHouten and died in 1838 at Ithica New York. Her descendents are very numerous.

5th Ebenezer Jayne, born in 1775. Of him I got no record, yet though in my boyhood I heard my father speak of him often. He was a soldier in 1812 and was wounded at S??????, and I remember hearing my father tell of meeting him in Philadelphia when I was but a child.
6th Timothy of whom I mad inquiry of you. He was born in 1777 and my brother William says he died in Pittsburgh in December 1850.
7th Rebecca born in 1779. Married William Hog (sp) a Baptist preacher, had one child, Rebecca. They moved somewhere in Western Penn. Have not her record.
8th Daniel Jayne born in 1781. Moved to Indiana. Was living there still in 1850. Have not, but will get his record.
9th Sarah born in 1783. Married James Decker. I remember going up the mountain south east of Stroudsburgh to see her when she was 73 years of age. She was a most charming old lady. She had a son in law who was then Sheriff of Monroe County, Penn.
10th Eliza C. born in 1785. Married John White and died in 1855 leaving 5 daughters, with one of whom I was acquainted for years before knowing our relationship.
So much for the family of our Grandfather's brother Captain Timothy . As you can understand, I cannot give details.

      Dear Cousin;

It is some time since I wrote you last since which time I have been busy in getting together such facts and data as I could in regard to the Jayne family and have accumulated and ???? a vast amount of data.
I want the family record of your Aunts excepting your Aunt Catharine whose family record I obtained from Mrs. Smith whose address you gave me. I enclose blank for your Aunt Julia, who if I recollect correctly, lives near you. Will you have the kindness to fill this out with your own family record and return to me. Shall I send the blanks to you for the balance of your Aunts and your undertake to get them tilled out or will you give me the address of some such member of each of their families from whom I would be most likely to get full and prompt answers. I also want the records of the families of your brother and sisters. Which I doubt not you can get for me, and I herewith enclose the blanks for that purpose.
I hope to get the record ready to print during the present year. I have had all the old records-Count, town and Church searched on Long Island and got the date of birth of all of the original seven brothers and the dates of their deaths except one and find he was living when nearly sixty. I have the hand writing of five of the seven. Can you tell me at what date your Grandfather moved from Northampton Co. into the Susq. Valley. Will you also give me the address of your cousins -- sons of your Uncle's Timothy and John. My plan is to put in all who bear the name Jayne and all whose mother was of that name. Have you a good picture of your father. I am collecting a number of photographs of the older members of the family.
      Very truly yours,
      B.G. Jayne

      B.G. JAYNE
      120 BROADWAY,
      NEW YORK, AUGUST 31, 1883

      David Jayne Esq.

      My Dear Sir:

I ma in receipt of your letter of August 28th and improve the first moment to answer it. The first man to write his name "Jayne" was William Jayne, who was born at Bristol, England, Jan.. 2, 1618. His name was "de Jeanne" pronounced Dejan. He was a student in Oxford University and was expelled in 1640 as a dissenter. He became a Presbyterian preacher and a follower of Cromwell. In 1660 when Charles the Second was restored to the throne, the persecution of the followers of Cromwell became very severe, and William de Jeanne fled to Monmothshire on the border of Wales and took the name of Jayne to escape ecclesiastic persecution. In 1678 at the age of 60 years William Jayne came to America and settled in the town of Brockhaven, where he married, and raised one daughter and seven sons. His youngest son was born April 15, 1700 when he was 82 years of age. William Jayne died March 24, 1714 aged 96 years 1 month and 29 days. Five of his sons raised families, Viz: William II, John, Matthias, Samuel, and Stephen. I am decended from William II, who had four sons, William III, Samuel, Isaac and Joseph. William II, the eldest of these four sons, was my great grandfather. He had six sons, William III, Timothy, Isaac, John, David, and Ebenezer. My father Beniah was the second son of John, and I am the sixth and youngest son of Beniah, and have my father's name with an initial "C" which I suppose was give to avoid the Jr. dr. David Jayne, of Philadelphia, was the fifth son of Ebenezer Jayne, my great grandfather's youngest brother. The youngest son of the first William J Jayne married Mary Hawkins in 1726, and had five sons, Stephen, Robert, Micaiah, John, and James, and two daughters, Hannah and Susannah. Micaiah Jayne the third son of Stephen sold his place on Long Island and moved to Canada 1793-4. He had five sons and one daughter, John, Micaiah, Stephen, James and Joseph and Hannah who married a man named Spencer. As I understand, your grandfather, John Jayne was the eldest son of Micaiah Jayne, and had four sons and three daughters. Your father's cousin, John Jayne, of Cosport, wrote me that all of John Jayne's children were dead except one daughter, who would of course be your aunt.
You asked me to define our relationship. Our great grandfathers were first cousins, which would make us fourth cousins - but we get our name from one common ancestor, William Jayne. The family has a history and one that most of us on this side are somewhat proud of, and we deem it due to our ancestors to preserve the record in as good form as possible. I was urged for a number of years to undertake the work of writing a history and record of the family which I consented to do some two years since. Since that time I have been tracing the different branches of the family. I am anxious to make it as complete as Possible, so that every man bearing the name can know all that is to be known of his ancestry. I am geting ready responses from most who bear the name. I am anxious my book shall contain the name of every one who has borne the name, whether living or dead. I want the fullest data that can be obtained. Can you not obtain for me the following:
1st, -- The date of birth, marriage and death of your grandfather Jayne.
2nd, -- The maiden name in full of your grandmother, the wife of John Jayne with the date of her birth and the place and date of her death, and if possible the names of her father and mother.
3rd, -- The dates of birth of each of the seven children of John Jayne with the names of their husbands and wives with the dates of their marriage and the place and dates of their death.
4th, -- The names of the children of these sons and daughters with the dates of their births and dates of marriage and if dead the place and dates of death, if living their place of residence or Post Office address. I will be glad to send a copy of the history and record to you or anyone who will furnish this data. Of course I understand the duties that press on a man's time who works a farm and know that this is a busy season of the year, for I was raised on a farm, and all of my brothers are farmers. You ask my business. I am engaged to some extent in manufacturing. I was for about 12 years in the employ of the U.S. Government, studied law, graduated from the law school of Columbian College, but have given but little attention to the profession. Since leaving Govt. employ, I have been president of a Clock Co. until last year. I am engaged in part in placing Western properties in this and on English market, and give my leisure time to writing the family record. I am in possession of many old and interesting papers connected with the family, and have consented to undertake the task of the solicitation of many of the family, and from a feeling that someone should do it. I have visited the old church yard and copied the inscriptions from the tomb stones over the graves of William Jayne and Stephen Jayne who were great grandfather of John Jayne who was your grandfather. Living on the spot where William Jayne settled in 1678, which was over two hundred years ago, lives Capt. Micah Jayne, a second cousin of your father. Capt. Micah was born in 1796 and is past 87 years of age and is still hale and hearty, and like a true old fashioned gentleman as he is shaves himself every morning. May I not hope to hear from you soon, giving me such data as you can gather. Meantime my kind regards to all who bear the name.
      I am,
      Very Truly Yours,
      B.G. Jayne
