Bob Douglass, born, Alfred Robert Douglass, died surrounded by his family exactly at sunset on Monday, October 14, 2019 at 87 years old. Bob was a deeply devoted family man. He adored his wife, 5 children, 5 grandchildren and his golden retrievers Nugget and Brew. He was a generous man with a tender heart. His adventurous spirit made him a playful Dad; always ready to jump in the car for a Sunday drive, to get ice cream cones after dinner or take off for a spontaneous weekend in the mountains. He was never happier than in the Adirondack woods, camping, hiking or canoeing with his whole family. He kept his cars clean, his drawers neat and the cellar fridge stocked with Rolling Rock beer, ready for company or just a cold one at the end of a long summer day.
He devotedly led a rugged band of Boy Scouts and also helped lead the teen organization in his parish of Sacred Heart in Suffern, NY, through the years his children participated in them.
In their retirement years, he and his beloved wife, Carol, lived in various places in the Adirondacks and spent many happy days with each other enjoying the beauty of the mountains. Bob and Carol were a special couple, whose love for each other was sustaining and deep. It was felt by anyone who spent time with them. Regardless of any hardship, they always came back to the love that brought them together.
Bob owned and ran his own business for many years. He designed and furnished offices as a representative for Steelcase Inc. and later provided prefabricated classrooms to schools on the East coast. He travelled frequently for business and was always glad to come home to his family. Together with Carol, he created a beautiful home for his children with wonderful gardens for them all to play in and enjoy.
Bob loved people and people loved him. He had a quick and ready smile for everyone he met. Bob looked for, and often found, the best in people. He was always ready to provide help, whatever the need.
Bob was a devout man, converting to Catholicism in Japan while in the Navy. He served as a Eucharistic minister at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, NY and got great satisfaction serving in this way.
Prior to his marriage in 1953, he served for 3 years in the US Navy from 1950-1953 aboard the USS New Jersey.
Bob was the younger of two sons. He was born to William Bennett (Ben) Douglass and Marjorie (Marge) Justa Douglass on May 20th 1932. Bob's youth was spent moving from place to place over the entire country, because his father worked as an inspector for Bell Telephone. He used to tell his kids he had lived in every state of the union except Alaska and Hawaii.
Bob's love for his family will be appreciated and celebrated by his children and grandchildren; who will always see him walking the woods in the Adirondacks. His presence will be felt whenever the family gathers together, for this is what gave him his greatest happiness, to be with his wife, surrounded by the love of his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his sons Robert Douglass, of New York, NY, Patrick Douglass of Fort Mongtomery, NY, John Douglass of Chester, NY, his daughters, Carol Douglass of Haydenville, MA and Tara Arcury of Shelburne, VT, and his brother William Douglass. He is predeacesed by his parents William and Marjorie Justa Douglass, his wife Carol Douglass and Grandson Morgan Douglass Gallagher.
Memorial Visitation will take place at William F. Hogan Funeral Home 135 Main Street, Highland Falls, NY on Friday, October 25, 2019 from 5-8pm. A memorial Mass will take place at Blessed Sacrament Chapel on Saturday October 26, 2019 at 10:00 AM.
