Born in Reydon or Southwold?; christened 12 Nov 1598?

May 1637 departed Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England in ship Mary Ann to Salem, Essex, Massachusetts

"At that time New England was over-supplied with ministers and teachers
who had fled from religious persecution in England, and, as the Rev. John
Youngs was without a charge, he left Salem and became the pioneer and
founder of Southold." Youngs family by Selah Youngs

      Died at age 74

"...Rev. John Youngs, led the Englishmen, women and children who settled Southold, Long Island, New York, in 1640."
"Among those who followed Rev. John to the north eastern end of Long Island were brother, Capt. "Rev. John Youngs - Rev. Christopher's oldest son - was the founder and leader of the first settlers of Southold, Long Island - the oldest English colony in New York State. The church Rev. John established in 1640 in the oldest, continously operating Presbyterian church in the United States."

Born c.1598, first pastor Rev. John Youngs/Yongs founded the Puritan settlement of Southold, Long Island, in 1640. A native of Reydon, in Suffolk, England, he was the son of the Rev. Christopher Youngs/Yonges and the former Margaret Ellwyn. He had come to the New World in 1637, arriving in Salem, Massachusetts, and was 74 at the time of his death in Southold some 35 years later.
Rev. Youngs' grave is one of nine originally marked by slate ledgerstones which were probably carved in England. His stone and that of William Wells are the earliest with legible dates in the burial ground. However, Rev. Youngs' original ledgerstine is now covered by a replacement. Made in 1935, it bears the original epitaph (see "Inscription" section of this page). In addition, it is also inscribed with the history of his descendants' efforts to preserve it:
"Under this tablet is the original brownstone slab, with the following inscription...The original inscription on this stone was recut in 1857 by one of the third and one of the fourth generation of Rev. Young's grandchildren, Dea. Stephen Youngs, Morristown, N.J. and Capt. Selah Younge, Mattituck, L.I. Recut 2nd time in 1900 by Edward F.C. Young of Jersey City, N.J....This ledger was executed in 1935 by Col. Edward L. Young, Jersey City, N.J."
