- Obituary - Herbert Hampton, aged 62, who died of a heart ailment Thursday night in his room on the third floor of the Winona hotel on Bay Avenue, Patchogue, was discovered about noon Friday.
Mr. Hampton, fully clothed, was slumped in a chair when Mrs. Armand of the hotel staff, after getting no response from knocking on the door, entered the room.
Dr. John W. Bennett pronounced death, then Coroner Grover A. Silliman, M.D., Sayville, ordered the body removed to the R.M. Sharp Funeral chapel, Railroad Avenue, Patchogue. Investigation was made by Village Police Chief Reynold K. Wicks.
Born in England, Mr. Hampton, a plasterer, had formerly lived in Patchogue for a number of years, and had just returned here after having lived about five years in New York.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Theresa Hampton of Bellflower, Cal.; a daughter by his second marriage, Mrs. Mary Hampton Jones, of Bellflower; three children by his first marriage, Miss Elsie Hampton of Patchogue, Miss Emily Hampton of Holtsville, and Archie Hampton who is with the Army in France, two brothers, George Hampton of Patchogue, and Archie Hampton of California, and a grandson.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Sharp chapel, the Rev. Hanington Wilson, rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, officiating. Interment was in Lakeview Cemetery.
