Notes - Obituary - Deacon Charles M. Hedges, a lifelong resident of this section and one of the oldest residents, died Saturday afternoon in Miss Hughes' private hospital following an illness of two weeks. He was 89. His funeral is being held this afternoon in the Congregational Church at 2:30, the Rev. Louis Harold Johnston officiating, with interment in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
Mr. Hedges was born in East Patchogue at the family homestead on December 20, 1839 and resided all his life in the same home. He was a son of the late Mulford and Mary Beale Hedges. In 1871 he married Miss Emma Louise Swezey, who died in 1921.
He was especially well known for his long stewardship of the Congregational Church, having been first elected a deacon back in 1880, and he had served continuously in that post until the time of his death, being senior deacon. Last year, in recognition of his long service, he was given a reception by the church.
He had been retired for several years but yet had always been active and was frequently seen about the streets. He leaves a brother, William B. Hedges, two daughters, Mrs. David Moore of Ridge, Md., and Mrs. Herbert Bartow of East Patchogue, six grandchildren and one great grandchild.
