- Henry was carpenter / builder throughout his life; a trade passed down to both his sons and grandsons.
Born in the town of Brookhaven, Henry appears with his parents, Jeremiah and Permelia Gordon in the 1850 census, age 20, Carpenter. He married Mary J. Corwin of Bellport about 1863. Together they had four children, all born in Port Jefferson (1870 and 1880 censuses; obituaries). Henry settled into Bridgeport around 1882, while still keeping one foot in Port Jefferson for several years. He appears in L.I. newspaper articles throughout this time, including one in 1884 mentioning "the case of Henry C. Gordon against Sylvester Gordon, his brother" and another in 1887 that mentions Henry's land in Port Jefferson is of interest to P. T. Barnum so that he may build several cottages on Barnum Ave. Henry died 31 Aug 1896 at Bridgeport, CT and was buried 2 Sep in the Gordon Family Plot at Mountain Grove Cemetery, Bridgeport.
