- Died at San Simeon by the Sound Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation
Joyce Preston Terry, 83, died at San Simeon by the Sound nursing home on March 5. She suffered from Alzheimer's disease.
She was born in Greenport to Ralph and Gertrude Preston on April 29, 1918, and graduated from Greenport High School. She also attended Lasell Junior College and the University of Arizona.
She lived for many years in Orient and belonged to Orient Congregational Church. Before her illness she was active in several community organizations, including the North Fork Animal Welfare League, Floyd Memorial Library and the Sterling Cemetery Association.
"Her dogs were one of the most important things in her life," according to longtime friend and neighbor Edward Wysocki of Orient. "They were her family and her happiness, and she can best be remembered for her love and devotion to animals and nature." She bred Irish setters and won many ribbons at dog shows over the years.
She was predeceased by her husband, Orville, and is survived by a sister, Ellen Vendeland of La Mesa, Calif., and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside ceremony was held on March 8 at the Terry family cemetery in Orient. Arrangements were by S.B. Horton Funeral Home, Greenport.
