      Carol Ann Smith, 62, of Lafayette, La., a native of Madison, Ind., died at 4:33 p.m. Sunday, October 17, 2004, at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center in Lafayette, La. Martin & Castille Funeral Home, Inc. of Lafayette, La. is in charge of funeral arrangements.
      Prior to her retirement, Ms. Smith was employed as an attorney with Roy, Bivins, Judice, Roberts & Wartelle Law Firm. She received her bachelor's degree from Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. She was previously the assistand dean at University of Illinois Law School in Urbana, Champaign. Throughout her career, Ms. Smith received several awards in journalism. She also worked at the USL Alumni House, now ULL. She worked on the staff of Olney Daily Mail, the Journal Gazette in Mattoon and News Gazette in Champaign. She loved to sing, listen to music and was an avid reader. She was a former president of Friends of the Library in Lafayette, La.
      Ms. Smith is survived by her mother, Elizabeth M. Smith; two brothers, Norman Ray Smith and his wife, Janice, and Robert Wayne Smith and his wife, Barbara G.; and two nieces, one nephew and two great-nephews.
      She was preceded in death by her father, Everett T. Smith.
