    • Obituary - Speonk, L.I., October 8 - Funeral services over the remains of Mrs. William Fordham, who died from heart disease on Monday, will be held from the Methodist Church in Manor, where she formerly lived, this afternoon. She had just recovered from an attack of typhoid fever when heart failure ensued, producing death.
Mrs. Fordham was brought into prominence through accepting the postmastership of the Speonk post office and thereby reviving and prolonging the controversy after Mrs. Julia Maynard had tendered her resignation of the office. Mrs. Maynard, who is a devout churchwoman, after having successfully presided over the office several years, suddenly decided that she could not with her religious scruples, continue to hold the office, the maintenance of which provoked such bitter feeling between even members of the same family in the locality. When her resignation was tendered and accepted, the old named was likely to be destined to oblivion unless some patriotic citizen would accept the postmastership. After the search for an eligible party to assume charge of the office was about to be abandoned, Mrs. Fordham, a public-spirited woman, volunteered her services and was promptly accepted. She is a sister of Mrs. Maynard.
