- Died at Memorial Hospital
Mrs. Mary Emma Darling, a native of Port Jefferson, L.I., died last Wednesday evening in Memorial Hospital, Manhattan, cancer being the cause of her demise. She was born at Port Jefferson, L.I., March 21, 1857, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Bird, the family being one of the oldest in this village. Her first husband was Israel Conklin, who for 45 years conducted a wheelwright and horseshoeing shop at East Islip, L.I. He passed away in 1901. In later years she married Captain Charles F. Darling, a well known yacht captain, who died in 1914. For the past 1S years the deceased has spent the winter months in the south visiting her daughter, Mrs. Arthur Brown, at Miami, Fla. Last Fall she went to California where she spent the winter with her two sons, Sidney S. Conklin, editor of the Press Telegram, at Long Beach, Cal., and Oscar Conklin, editor of the Free Press, at Ventura, Cal., the latter she had not seen for eleven years. Mrs. Darling was one of the oldest members of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, at Islip, and was also a member of Biscayne Chapter No. 75, Order of the Eastern Star, at Miami, Fla., and was a resident of East Islip for more than 50 years. Funeral services were held last Sunday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Oscar Broseck, Main Street, East Islip, The Rev. William H. Garth, rector of St. Mark's Church officiating, and the interment was in Oakwood Cemetery, at Bay Shore. Besides a brother, Samuel Bird of Brookhaven, L.I., the deceased is survived by two sons, Sidney R. Conklin of Long Beach, Cal., and Oscar Conklin, of Ventura, Cal. and two daughters, Mrs. Arthur Brown, of Miami, Fla., and Mrs. Oscar Broseck of East Islip, and six grandsons and one granddaughter.
