Barbara was member of a group of 52 Swiss people who were assisted by the Swiss government to emigrate to America. Her family settled in Sec. 13 across the Mormon Coulee Creek from the Lauterbach homestead. Other Swiss immigrants lived nearby. Heinrich: Henry is the original immigrant. His obituary indicated that he had first gone to Texas and then chose to settle in Wisconsin. His brother August brought his parents and sisters to LaCrosse County. He had purchased land in Sec 25 in the town of Shelby. The Land Grant was signed by Pres. Buchanan The original farm buildings were located at the end of a narrow coulee off of what is now Highway 14. It is named Lauterbach Coulee. The farm remained in the family for 3 generations.
