      AUGUSTINE BLYDENBURGH
Nearly all Blydenburghs in the U.S. can trace their ancestry to Augustine Blydenburgh, who was b. before 1630, presumably in the Netherlands since he was referred to as a “Hollander”. He d. between 20 August 1685 – 13 April 1686 in New York City.
The surname Anglicized as Blydenburgh, with or without an h, appears in many variants historically and among the Dutch, often with an “ij” or “ey” in lieu of a “y”, sometimes an “e” instead of a “u”, sometimes without a “d” or with a “t” instead, with or without ending “h”, and other variations. In Augustine’s will his name is spelled Augustin Blythenbord.
Research by Henry Hoff, Harry Macy Jr., and Edward H.L. Smith III, published in the NY Genealogical & Biographical Record, volume 140 (2009), shows that before Augustine’s arrival in New York, he had owned property (375 acres) in Old Rappahannock, now Essex, County, Virginia, from as early as 1655 or 1656. He sold that land in 1662, probably leaving Virginia at about that time. He may or may not have gone directly to New York, but appears in records there starting in 1672. At least a few of his descendants remained in the Chesapeake Bay region.
There was a merchant Paulus Blijenberg/Blydenburgh in New Amsterdam (now New York) between 1658-1661, who may have been a close relative of Augustine’s.
Augustine m. Silvestia, surname unknown, before 23 January 1661/62 in Virginia. She was b. about 1640, and d. before 8 January 1688/89 in New York City. Her first husband, of whom she is presumed widow, was an unknown Green/Grien. Her child from that marriage, Augustine’s step-daughter, was known variously as Mary Green/Grien and Mary Blydenburgh. She was b. before 1661, probably in Virginia, m. Harmon/Hermanus King/Kinge 28 May 1676 in the Dutch Reformed Church in New York City, and d. 24 January 1740/41 in Burlington County, New Jersey. Children of Augustine and Silvestia include:
