death cert. #10911; killed by a Long Island railroad train

Obituary - James Sinclair, a well known citizen of this village, was struck and killed between ten and eleven o'clock last Friday morning by a special train from Sag Harbor, having aboard President Baldwin of the Long Island road and a party of friends. Mr. Sinclair, who was quite deaf, started across the tracks after leaving the post office. The engine struck him on the right side and tossed him more than fifty feet. Mr. Sinclair was 65 years old and was born in Patchogue. He leaves a widow and five children. Mrs. Sinclair's first husband, H. Peterson, was drowned before her eyes while crossing the bay on the ice about 20 years ago.
Also- James Sinclair, of Patchogue, while crossing the railroad track at Rider Avenue, about ten o'clock Friday morning, was struck and instantly killed by a special train bearing President Baldwin and other of the road's officials on their way to Sag Harbor. Sinclair was returning home from the post office, and was just about to cross the track, when the train struck him on the right side, throwing him about fifty feet away. The train backed to the scene, and the body was picked up and carried to the village. The body was taken to Undertaker Ruland's shop, where an examination showed all of the ribs of the right side to be broken, the right arm broken above the elbow and a deep cut in the head. It is said the engineer saw Sinclair approaching and whistled lying, but Sinclair was too deaf to hear the warning. The engineer when he saw Sinclair did not heed the signal, attempted to slow up but it was too late. Mr. Sinclair was about 65 years old. He leaves a widow, whose first husband was drowned.
