Son of Clarence Elbert Peterson, a bayman, and Julia Agnes Sweezey, husband of Helen K. Conklin, whom he married on August 16, 1917 in Greenport, Suffolk, NY.
On June 5, 1917, William was working as an express driver for Adams Express Company in Greenport, L.I. when he registered for the draft during World War I.
William Henry Peterson was inducted into military service on September 19, 1917 at the age of 23 years, 4 months. At that time, he gave his place of birth at Patchogue, NY and his residence as 3rd Street, Greenport, Suffolk. It was stated that he served with Co. B., 305 MG Battalion until the time of his honorable discharge at the rank of Corporal on January 17, 1918 due to physical disability.
In 1920, William H. Peterson, aged 26, and his wife, Helen K. Peterson, aged 24, could be found living in Southold, NY. William was shown to be a clerk for the Quarter Master Corps.
