Born Gloria F. Biggs; raised by aunt, Julia Frances Biggs, who changed her name to Mildred Biggs

Since Mildred's mother died giving birth to her, she was adopted by her father's sister Julia. Julia divorced her first husband (name not known) and married a service man and had children by him. When Julia died, her sister, Irene, wrote Mildred and told her she had siblings. That was the first time Mildred knew she had siblings. This is according to Marian Biggs Chapman, Mildred and Irene's sister.
