Obituary - Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hammond, of 243 West Avenue, Patchogue, died as the result of injuries received in an automobile accident near Dover, Del., December 19. Mr. Hammond, 76, was born in Patchogue. He was the foreman in the weaving department at the Patchogue-Plymouth Mill until its closing. He is survived by a son, Earl of Bayport; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Pascoe of Blue Point; four sisters, Mrs. Mabel Wilbur, Mrs. Daniel Whaley, and Mrs. Grayce Dorn, all of Patchogue, and Mrs. Leon Manning of Leroy, O., two brothers, Harvey and Percy, both of Patchogue; and a grandchild. Mrs. Hammond, 77, was born in Manchester, England. She was a forelady in the lace department at the Patchogue-Plymouth Mill, and a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Patchogue. Services for the couple were held at the Ruland Funeral Home, Patchogue, December 23, with the Rev. John E. Southard, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Interment for Mr. Hammond was in the Cedar Grove Cemetery, Patchogue, and for Mrs. Hammond, in Lakeview Cemetery, Patchogue. Also - Killed In Delaware - According to the wire service reports, an elderly couple were fatally injured Tuesday night at an intersection near Dover, Delaware. Killed were Arthur Hammond, 76, and his wife, Emily, 75, of 243 West Avenue, Patchogue. The report said that both were killed when their car was in collision with a milk delivery truck. The truck driver, Roy Aronson, 31 of suburban Dover, escaped injury, the report stated. The couple had been visiting a stepson, John Rowley Sr., of Dover, and had gone for an evening ride. Calvin Wheaton removed from Litchfield County in 1814 and settled in Lawsville, this county, near Great Bend, where he took up a piece of timber land and carried on the lumbering business about seven years, when they were obliged to yield the property to others under a previous title. (CT & PA for years disputed the ownership of Northeastern PA) They returned to Connecticut and settled on the old Hurd place. In 1831 Nathan P. and Roswell Wheaton came to Franklin Township (PA) and purchased the property where D.B. Townsend now resides, upon which their parents returning, settled the following year. Nathan spent several years manufacturing brick, by which means he accumulated sufficient means, and returned to Franklin in 1838 and paid the balance due upon his purchase. In the fall of that year, he married Mary Watson, who was born September 8, 1814, and for ten years carried on his farm, sold it and purchased his present property, the salt spring lot, on Silver Creek, about a mile West of Franklin Forks. ...... Elijah Terry, son of Timothy Brewster Terry and Elizabeth Davis Terry, was born near Coram Village, February 14, 1787 where his parents had a homestead. When Elijah Terry began his teaching career he was teaching students in his father’s house. His first class was made up of 7 boys. Elijah married Caroline Overton Terry and built their 1823 home known today as the Terry House, on Farm to Market Road (Portion Road). It was about 300 feet to the East of College Road. The two story house consisted of 4 rooms with a central three-sided fireplace on the first floor with two rooms upstairs. Elijah and Caroline had 4 children. Elijah Terry was credited with being the first teacher in Bald Hills. Part of his salary was his care and supply of wood to keep the school decently warm. He was a scholarly person and wrote his own books. There is record of an arithmetic book written by Elijah in the early 1800s. He was also a farmer as teachers received little pay in those days. Heart Throbs of the West, v. 11 Came to Utah in 1850, in Stephen Markham's company. Listed both as Mary C. Houghton and as Mary C. Markham. Life Sketch: (William) Don (Carlos) Markham's mother, Mary Curtis Houghton Markham, was born in Highland, Oakland, Michigan. She was the daughter of Jeremiah Curtis and Ruthy Stratton. She marr5ied Oren Houghton when she was 14 years old and to them was born one son, Edgar. Her husband died, and in 1850, Mary with her son and her sister's two children, immigrated to Utah in one of Grandfather's (Stephen Markham) companies. They left Nauvoo in June, 1850. She worked hard for four long months driving a span of mules, a yoke of cows, and a yoke of heifers across the dreary plains. The weary company arrived in Salt Lake on 4 October, 1850. She was married to Grandfather (Stephen Markham) when she was 18 and he was 50 years old, and they settled in Palmyra (may now be Leland, UT) in 1851. Heart Throbs of the West, v. 11 Came to Utah in 1850, in Stephen Markham's company. Listed both as Mary C. Houghton and as Mary C. Markham. Life Sketch: (William) Don (Carlos) Markham's mother, Mary Curtis Houghton Markham, was born in Highland, Oakland, Michigan. She was the daughter of Jeremiah Curtis and Ruthy Stratton. She marr5ied Oren Houghton when she was 14 years old and to them was born one son, Edgar. Her husband died, and in 1850, Mary with her son and her sister's two children, immigrated to Utah in one of Grandfather's (Stephen Markham) companies. They left Nauvoo in June, 1850. She worked hard for four long months driving a span of mules, a yoke of cows, and a yoke of heifers across the dreary plains. The weary company arrived in Salt Lake on 4 October, 1850. She was married to Grandfather (Stephen Markham) when she was 18 and he was 50 years old, and they settled in Palmyra (may now be Leland, UT) in 1851.
